The history of Nohrd and its flagship product, the WaterRower, began in 1988 when John Duke, an engineer from Yale University and a candidate for the US National Rowing Team, invented the WaterRower. His goal was to create a rowing machine that replicated the experience of rowing on water, combining the sound and resistance of real rowing with the physiological benefits of the exercise. Duke envisioned a piece of fitness equipment that would also serve as beautiful furniture, inspired by the elegant simplicity of Shaker design.
In 1991, the brand expanded internationally with the establishment of WaterRower UK. Over the years, Nohrd evolved as a sister brand to WaterRower, focusing on functional fitness equipment designed for modern living spaces. The company emphasizes sustainable manufacturing practices, using ethically sourced materials. Today, Nohrd continues to innovate, offering a range of high-quality fitness products that marry aesthetics with functionality, maintaining Duke’s original vision of creating lasting fitness solutions.
